Cumberland Island National Seashore 50th Anniversary Commemoration Speaker Series


ST. MARYS, GA (September 15, 2022) – Cumberland Island National Seashore invites the community to attend a free cultural heritage speaker series commemorating the anniversary of Cumberland Island’s designation as a national seashore. The park will kick off a year-long celebration starting on October 1, 2022, with a Commemoration Kick-off Event during the St. Marys Seafood Festival. The Speaker Series will continue the special programming through October 2023. 


This much anticipated speaker series will begin on October 23rd at 2:00 p.m., at the College of Coastal Georgia, Camden Center with a presentation and discussion by Lary Dilsaver, Professor Emeritus of Historical Geography at the University of South Alabama and NPS Career Research Award winner. He will present on the complex and often controversial history of Cumberland Island National Seashore, focusing on its origin and many preservation challenges. Lary is a thirty-year volunteer researcher for the National Park Service and has written more than forty articles and book chapters on national parks and historic landscapes. He has authored or edited six books, including Cumberland Island National Seashore: A History of Conservation Conflict, which is available locally at the Cumberland Island visitor centers Eastern National Bookstore and Once Upon a Bookseller. There will be a meet & greet following the program at 3:00 p.m. 


The second speaker series program will be on Sunday, April 22, 2023, at 2 p.m. when Dr. Wayne Clough presents on the diverse and complex topic of the ecology and natural history of Cumberland Island. A Douglas, Georgia native, Dr. Clough is President Emeritus, Georgia Tech and was the 12th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute. He served as president of Georgia Tech from 1994 to 2008 wherehe championed programs encouraging research, international experiences, and making college more affordable for low-income students. The Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons is named in his honor. 


The final program is planned for Sunday, June 17, 2023, at 2 p.m. and will feature academic, artist, advocate, and South Carolina native, Sunn m’Cheaux presenting on the Gullah language and its rich history. Sunn is a resident lecturer and African language program instructor for Project Teach at Harvard University. He has collaborated in film and television as an actor and as a Gullah language and culture consultant. 


All programs will take place at the College of Coastal Georgia, Camden Center and are presented with the support of the GOPE Group of Companies, SureStay Plus Hotel, St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau, Riverside Hotel, the City of St. Marys, and the Friends of Fort Frederica.
